I Work with Yeses

I work with yeses. I am the college female Jim Carey from “Yes Man”. I  learn by answering ‘yes’ to any question I am asked. “Can you write us a rough script?” “Yes.” And I learn how to write a script. “Can you come help shoot this interview?” “Yes.” I learn how to set up the Blackmagic, choose the appropriate lens, and shoot an interview. “Can you write a blog post for the website? ” “Yes.” I learn how to work with Mac Word (I am a PC girl), and write a FiveCore blog post.

I have been working for Fivecore for three months now and have realized that this line of work is more than yeses. While the brunt of the understanding on how to make a promo or educational video comes from experience that you acquire through young yeses, there is also the understated “yes, but…”.

I came to realize the importance of that extra syllable, that innocuous conjunction, while working on a video to explain and promote Faith Mentoring. I placed together interviews of professors and students along with footage of soccer fields and bees. I added a soundtrack and saw the addition of color correction and graphics. I thought I had learned how to make a video. Kyle, however after watching the video shared with me some of the most important words of video production, “99% done is not done.”

Creating a video is about attention to detail, detail that I still need to train my eye to see. Working on Faith Mentoring I gained an understanding of the precision that we as a company owe to our clients. I also grasped the importance of having multiple eyes invested in one project. I learned to say “Yes, I can add more footage, I can increase the volume but what would be the best way to do that.” It only takes asking once to turn a 99% done video, a 99% understanding, into a complete and satisfying final project.

“Can you write a blog post for the website?” “Yes, but what would you like me to focus on?” “Make it informal, maybe talk about the faith mentoring project.”
