Another Look at Conspirare

Kate Yoder– Assistant Producer

The very first project FiveCore completed last September was a recording shoot for a well-known choir named Conspirare. The choir is based out of Austin, Texas but the great acoustics of Sauder Concert Hall brings Conspirare to Goshen when they record an album. The choir was interested in making a ‘Behind the Scenes’ video and hired FiveCore to shoot video during the recording sessions. For many of us, it was the first multi-camera shoot we had worked on and those two days of shooting were a huge learning curve. The record label planned to hire an editor in Austin, but FiveCore went ahead and put together a short promotional video for the choir anyway. The record label liked the video so much that, months later, when they decided they wanted a longer video to promote the album’s release in August they knew just who to call.

Originally, when the record label called us in mid-July they wanted the video ASAP.  Faced with a week and a half turn around schedule Daniel Penner and I got to work organizing the videos files right away. Neither of us had looked at the footage since last September since Ben Sutter put together the first video. However, Daniel and I love a good challenge. This video was particularly difficult because we had to stitch together footage from separate takes into one seamless song.  It took hours of transcribing footage and even more hours in the editing room but with a lot of collaboration, Daniel and I were able to put together a rough draft within the week.

Then Kyle took a look at it and gave us things to fix and we went back to editing. As the recording label worked out Conspirare’s promotional schedule they informed us that the deadline for the video was more fluid than originally planned so we had another week to slow down and fine tune the video. Sadly, Daniel’s last day of work was that week so Kyle and I finished the video without him.

Working under pressure is stressful but oddly thrilling at the same time, and with the right people, pressure situations can actually be fun. We ran into numerous problems along the way, but we learned from every challenge we came across. For example, saving every five minutes isn’t such a bad idea since you never know when the program may crash. I gained a lot of experience from this project that I will carry on to my future projects with FiveCore Media.
