From Greece to Goshen

Kate Yoder– Supervising Producer

This past May term I had the incredible opportunity of going to Greece and Italy with a Broadcasting class at Goshen College. We visited important areas of Greece and Italy that the Apostle Paul traveled to during his ministry. I acted as assistant producer and took on responsibilities such as conducting the interviews with theologians and supervising the student crew. I am lucky to have not only have visited these amazing places but to also learn valuable lessons in the art of producing.

A majority of a producer’s job is to deal with people, both clientele and staff. This trip gave me experience working with both. The experts we interviewed for the documentary didn’t have experience in front of the camera, so I needed to set them at ease and at the same time get them to say specific information. I also had to come up with questions during the interview, which meant I was forced to constantly think on my feet. These experiences have helped me immensely in my work with FiveCore Media as relaxing clients during the interview makes a huge difference on camera.

Everyday in Greece and Rome required a certain level of preparation and flexibility. Time was a luxury we almost never had and we often worked through lunch. Once we had to set up, conduct an interview, and tear down in 15 minutes. It was a surprise challenge that the crew handled wonderfully. Those type of experiences help me during FiveCore production as well. When we’re filming in public locations and businesses, filming quickly and efficiently is important. Knowing how to work under pressure and still producer a good video is essential to video production. These are experiences and skills that I learned on our trip to Greece and Rome that I am applying to my work here at FiveCore Media and will apply to future jobs as well.
